Off Track Rarely Means Done For

Doors leave their tracks for a few common reasons: a bumper nudges the bottom section, a roller cracks, a cable gives out, or track brackets work loose over years of vibration. The result looks alarming, with sections twisted and rollers hanging in the air, but the door itself is often fine.

What matters is handling it safely. A derailed door is held unevenly by its springs and cables and can move suddenly. We clamp and support it, fix the track, replace damaged rollers and correct whatever caused the problem.

Signs the Door Has Left Its Track

  • Rollers outside the channel

One or more rollers have visibly popped out of the track, usually low on the door or at the curve.

  • Door hangs at an angle

The door sits skewed in the opening with a wider gap on one side.

  • Kinked or loose track

A dent, a bow or a bracket pulled off the wall lets rollers escape.

  • Panels bowing

Sections bulge or fold where the door tried to move without support from the track.

Putting the Door Back Where It Belongs

  1. 01

    Secure first

The door is clamped and propped, and spring tension released if that's needed to work safely.

  2. 02

    Straighten or replace track

Mild bends are trued up. Track with sharp kinks is replaced and re-anchored to solid framing.

  3. 03

    Rehang the rollers

Rollers go back into the channel, cracked or worn ones are swapped, and cables are checked.

  4. 04

    Run full travel

The door is cycled by hand, then by opener, to confirm it tracks straight and stops where it should.

Off-Track Questions

What should I do right now?

Stop using it. Unplug the opener, keep people and cars away from the door and don't try to force rollers back in. Leave the emergency release alone too, since disconnecting an unbalanced door from the opener can let it drop.

Will I need new panels?

Usually not. A slow-speed derailment typically costs some rollers and a length of track. If the door was struck hard or someone forced it, a section can crease, and we'll show you the damage and whether that one section is worth replacing.

Door Twisted in the Opening?

Leave it as it is and keep clear. We'll walk you through what to expect on the call.
