Where Most Door Noise Comes From

The rollers carry each panel along the track, and the hinges let the panels fold as the door turns overhead. Basic rollers have bare steel bearings that rust and dry out, and their wheels wear flat or chip. Hinges crack where the sections fold over the curve of the track. Either way, the door starts to grind, rattle and shudder.

This is one of the most affordable upgrades a door can get, relative to the difference it makes. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers run quietly and hold up well in humid garages, and fresh hinges stop sections from sagging and rubbing.

Signs the Hardware Is Worn

  • Grinding on every trip

A gritty, metal-on-metal sound usually means roller bearings that no longer spin smoothly.

  • Rollers that wobble

A roller that tilts in the track or has a chipped wheel is dragging instead of rolling.

  • Split hinge leaves

Look for cracks near the hinge knuckle or loose bolts where hinges meet the panel.

  • A sagging section

If a panel dips in the middle when the door is open, the hinges holding it are failing.

How the Swap Is Done

  1. 01

    Check every joint

Each roller and hinge is inspected, not just the noisy ones, since hardware installed together tends to wear out together.

  2. 02

    Match the parts

Stem length and wheel size are chosen for your track, and each hinge position gets the correct numbered hinge.

  3. 03

    Bottom brackets with care

The lowest rollers sit in brackets under cable tension, so they're changed only after the springs are unloaded.

  4. 04

    Lubricate and listen

Bearings and pivots get a door-specific lubricant, then the door is run until it travels quietly and evenly.

Roller and Hinge Questions

Is it worth replacing rollers that still technically work?

If they wobble, grind or have flat spots, yes. They're inexpensive relative to the wear they put on the opener, and swapping the full set at once means the door runs evenly instead of quiet on one side and noisy on the other.

Are nylon rollers strong enough?

For typical residential doors, quality nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings handle the load well and run much quieter than steel. Very heavy or high-use doors may call for a heavier-duty roller, which we'll point out if it applies.

Tired of Hearing the Door Coming?

Fresh rollers and hinges are a short job, and you'll hear the difference on the first trip.
